The Floating Cloud: Gentle Rope Suspension

While most rope suspensions can involve bodily discomfort, they don’t have to focus on suffering. In this class, we’ll explore rope suspension with intention of creating a peaceful, meditative experience for the rope bottom. By approaching suspension with care and mindfulness, we can shift the focus from endurance to serenity. Gentle suspensions can feel less intimidating for newer bottoms and offer seasoned suspension bottoms a refreshing, mindful alternative.

We’ll learn and practice a suspension I’ve nicknamed “The Floating Cloud.” We’ll start by reviewing the key harnesses involved (fisherman and hip harnesses), followed by a demo and hands-on practice time. I’ll also demo a side suspension — a position that looks impressive but is often surprisingly accessible for newer suspension bottoms! Instruction for the side suspension will be less detailed, but will offer bonus material and practice opportunities for more advanced riggers who complete the first suspension early.

Recommended Experience

The intended audience for this class is late beginner to intermediate suspension riggers. Comfort with up-lines is expected.

All participants should have familiarity with up-lines, Y-hangers, basic fisherman harness, basic hip harness, munter hitches, and X-frictions. For the advanced track, you should have familiarity with the butterfly harness and gunslinger hip harness.

Required Materials

Tying rope. Bandana or tea towel. Suspension kit (including upline rope, ring and/or multiple carabiners)
