Picturing the Obscene: Power Dynamics of Rope, Camera, and Photograph

What sparked your interest in rope bondage? For many, we were drawn to rope through photographs that arrest our attention, arousing something within us long before we ever learned how to tie. These potent pictures draw us to seek out education and community. Along the way, we realize rope is more than an image can capture, yet we still feel compelled to document our sessions, whether with careful intention or as casual mementos.

In this hands-on workshop, you will explore the shifting dynamics - not only between rigger and rope bottom, or photographer and subject, but also through the final image’s connection to its viewers. We will draw inspiration from the etymology of the word “obscene,” meaning “off-scene,” and think about the stories that live beyond the frame, unseen but present in the penumbra.

Recommended Experience

This 90-minute class builds on the MRM 2024 workshop offered by us, though no prior experience is required. It is open to photographers and rope bondage practitioners of all experience levels. Participants should be comfortable engaging in rope practice and willing to collaborate in a creative group setting. Each group will need at least one participant with a camera (a phone camera is sufficient) and a basic understanding of how to use it, including focus, exposure, and framing, along with the ability to transfer the final image to a device for sharing and collective viewing, either through Airdrop or email.
